Hell, I just beat Actraiser again last week. I'm not saying this as someone who hasn't picked up a retro game in a few decades, but as someone who still constantly plays old games. I watched the video, I understand the argument, and I still disagree that it is absolutely necessary. Not saying that it isn't incredible that we have the option to do it, and not saying that adding scanlines is "wrong" or "right" or something, just that it's a preference thing, and that just because someone might not use or enjoy them doesn't mean they're less "legit" than someone who does. They've been a part of my life continually since I was a kid, so CRT scanlines aren't enough of the experience, to me, to get uptight about. In fact, I'd attribute my attachment to the games rather than simulated visual effect more to the fact that I've continued to play these games through my life than anything else. I have a television/media center in my house dedicated to my retro consoles and have my original NES, SNES, and PSX hooked up - I play them all regularly. I've been gaming my whole life, constantly going back and revisiting and playing my games. If you spent 20 years without playing the game or console I can understand.

Retroarch together with a Frontend like Launchbox or Hyperspin is imo the best way to emulate a number of systems on PC (i dont know how well the mobile version or the console versions work). Retroarch also has a ton of other useful features that make life easier like auto-configuration for the controller, per game- and per core- custom configurations, online updater for the cores etc. To launch the games I use Launchbox configured with Retroarch so I can have the box cover art and dont have to scroll through the weird file names.

Im using Shaders from the old-school analog TV pack version 2 by Solid12345 and they look AMAZING.įor MAME games I also use Arcade Cabinet Overlays by John.Merrit together with Retro Shaders - beautiful! Playing old games like SNES, Genesis, NES, Atari, Arcade without any kind of shader (or worse - upscaled or stretched) - the games just look completely flat and wrong on modern monitors. Its worth it for the CRT shader support alone.
